Unreasonable Fears

When Louise was a little girl visiting her German grandmother in a Brooklyn flat circa 1928, she saw the Quaker Oats man for the first time on a carton of cereal and ran screaming in terror through the apartment, scrambling for her life. She had the same reaction on subsequent sightings. Today, while not terrified, Louise is uneasy around the Quaker Oats man. She is also uneasy around raisins, buttons, and pasta fashioned into bows or curls or other unnatural shapes.

  1. I knew a woman who had heard the Clabber Girl Baking Soda people speak to her when she was a child. It was far less traumatic.
